A female driver may well be looking at costlier car insurance quotes after crashing her car in a South Shields shopping centre.
The middle-aged woman lost control of her Vauxhall Corsa as she was leaving a parking space, sending it careering backwards into a metal barrier. The vehicle stopped for a few seconds, with the driver reportedly looking stunned, then suddenly flew forwards onto the nearby pavement.
A witness explained what happened, saying: "It was going quite fast, as if the accelerator had jammed.
"The pavement was pretty busy with people. This one woman saw it coming and tried to get out the way. At the last second the car smashed into a bin and hit a bollard.
"The force of that seemed to deflect it away from the woman, who was injured."
In a bizarre twist of events, the lady then got out of her car and offered the hurt woman a toffee.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police explained that they were investigating whether the accident had been caused the driver or by a mechanical fault with the car.
If it is deemed to be the motorist's responsibility, it seems quite likely that she will have to claim on her motor insurance for the damage to her car in the accident. However, even if it is found to be down to a mechanical issue, she may still see the impact on her car insurance quotes.
