According to an article published in the UK press on 11th May 2008, cheap car insurance (amongst other things) could be seen as a reason to get hitched.
The Office for National Statistics has produced figures demonstrating that since the 1970s the number of people living alone has doubled and it seems this increase is due to more women choosing to live alone.
However, the female writer's piece decried many and various places and situations where the successful single female or 'freemale' loses out financially to her happily coupled-up peers.
When looking at car insurance it was pointed out that one well known insurer would reduce the premium for a single 35-year-old woman who drives a Ford Puma from £232.55 to £173.75 if she added her 36-year-old partner as a named driver.
Thinking about car insurance, if more women switched to a company who specialise in female driver insurance, such as CoverGirl, then they should save money and be able to carry on with their single life.
The author of the article questioned just how sustainable single living can be with the rising cost of just about everything, but can financial benefits ever be reason to start a co-habiting relationship with someone? Surely, any financial gain should be a mere perk and the true reward is finding love and commitment within a relationship.
There are all manner of ways to make your money go further as a single woman and we are constantly bombarded with high street alternatives for low-cost fashion, groceries and energy saving products that will help your consumption of gas and electricity. It just takes a little effort to save money and maybe some self-will.
A woman was quoted in the article as saying, "There's just no monetary benefit to being single. Other than the council tax reduction [a 25 per cent reduction for people living alone] you get no discounts or benefits at all and what little money you do have is taken away from you in bills."
Are we returning to a society where money and matters of marriage are constantly at the forefront of our minds in a bid for financial security? I, for one, hope not. During my own personal time as a single mother I actually found myself better off than during my marriage and would urge anyone to think far more emotionally about a prospective partner than financially.
