A survey carried out by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has revealed that support for speed cameras among UK drivers has fallen by more than 20 percent in the past eight years, possibly due to resentment over lost cheap car insurance rates.
Nine out of ten drivers thought they were a force for good back in 1999, but in 2007 only 69 percent of us still think cameras are a good thing.
The change in sentiment could be down to the large numbers who have been caught speeding by cameras, usually resulting in a fine and the loss of cheap car insurance. As many as 25 percent of those questioned by IAM have either been caught themselves, or lived with someone who had.
"The ever-growing number of speed cameras in this country might make them appear a bit menacing - but the fact is, if you keep to the speed limit, you've nothing to worry about," said a spokeswoman for CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, the women's car insurance experts.
