Research for the BBC has found that ladies are more in favour than men of a smoking while driving ban, perhaps because they know the effect it may have on their cheap car insurance rates.
The Populous poll revealed that 70% of ladies believe it would be a good move to ban smoking behind the wheel, compared to just 54% of men.
Those in favour of the ban say that having a smoke while driving is potentially distracting and could lead to accidents. A ban may lead to a reduction in the number of motor insurance claims made, and thus help more drivers get cheap car insurance rates.
Gender was not the only factor which was found to affect the response of those interviewed by Populous. Age was also key, with those aged over 55 revealed to be the most in favour of banning smoking behind the wheel. However, the majority of 35- to 54-year-olds also gave their support to the move.
Gemma Turner, a spokesperson for the cheap car insurance specialists at CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, said: "Although I have seen no statistics that suggest smoking whilst driving is a major cause of car accidents, it is undoubtedly a factor in a number of crashes each year.
"If a ban helps to bring down the road casualty rate in the UK, I believe that it can only be a good thing."
