Female motorists are being advised to check the details of their cheap car insurance policies before buying after research reveals that the level of cover can vary dramatically between providers.
A study by KwikGuides.com has found that many drivers are being caught out by charges for services they had expected to receive as standard.
These services include amending details, European driving cover and the provision of a courtesy car.
For example, the AA charges motorists £25 to change the details on their cheap car insurance policy, whilst Churchill also has a fee of £21. In comparison, Norwich Union will happily change a policyholder's details for nothing.
The research showed that more than 7.5 million drivers each year have to pay to change their details when they buy a new car.
KwikGuides believes that many of these services are not being provided as standard because motor insurance providers want to lure new custom by offering extremely cheap car insurance quotes.
However, it warns ladies that these low cost motor insurance rates are being offered at the cost of some of the standard services.

*A replacement car can normally be arranged under one of the following conditions: (1) Comprehensive policyholders – a replacement car may be available under the terms of your insurance policy. Please check your policy details for more information. (2) Non fault accident – where we have the name, car registration number and insurance details of the person who caused the accident, we can supply a replacement car. This is done on a credit hire basis which means the costs for this service will be passed onto the insurance company of the person who caused the accident. We may not be able to arrange a replacement car where we are unable to get an admission of liability from their insurance company, or where the driver is untraceable or uninsured. (3) Repair garage – if your car is booked in for repairs following an accident, the repair garage may be able to provide a replacement car (subject to availability).
