Supermarkets are well known for their low cost food and clothing. However, a woman's search for cheap car insurance has revealed that they may not be the place to find the best motor insurance quote.
The research was carried out by a female journalist as part of a study by the Daily Mail and involved an imaginary family searching for cheap car insurance deal. It looked at quotes that were given to a 41-year-old woman for a Vauxhall Zafira and those given to a 44-year-old man who drives a Peugeot 406.
The outcome of the study revealed that supermarket motor insurance quotes were not the cheapest on the market.
The female driver got the best car insurance rate with Budget, with her quote coming in at £167.84. In comparison, Sainsbury's Bank gave her a rate of £253.76, whilst Marks & Spencer's car insurance came in at £252.92. However, the latter policy did include enhanced features, such as legal expenses cover, which Budget did not.
The male driver was given the cheapest motor insurance quote by More Than, which quoted him £251.02. The most expensive supermarket policy was £322.27 from Sainsbury's Bank, whilst Asda most affordable car insurance of all the supermarkets, offering a quote of £274.17.
A spokesperson for CoverGirl Car Insurance Services said: "As this research suggests, the best idea is to shop around as much as possible when your insurance is up for renewal.
"By doing so, you will likely save more money than if you choose a provider that you think will be the cheapest."
