The outcome of research by Thatcham suggests that ladies are likely to cost their cheap car insurance companies less in whiplash injury payouts.
Thatcham, an organisation dedicated to safer driving and also known as the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre, found that female drivers were more likely than men to have their headrest set to the correct position.
Whilst 75% of men surveyed had got the positioning wrong or had not adjusted their headrest at all, 43% of ladies were found to have suitably-positioned headrests.
A spokesperson for Thatcham said: "The manufacturers are doing their bit - now the public have to wake up to whiplash. The head restraint should be seen as every bit as important as the seat belt - yet people seem oblivious as to how to use it properly."
He went on to say that more than 125,000 whiplash injuries could be prevented in the UK each year if drivers took the time to adjust their head rest properly.
Whiplash costs cheap car insurance companies many millions of pounds in compensation claims each year and if some of these claims were to be prevented, drivers may be able to benefit from cheaper quotes.
