A survey by Virgin Money Car Insurance has revealed that the majority of adults would like to see permits for 4x4s, with ladies being more supportive of the idea than men.
The cheap car insurance company surveyed drivers from all over the country and found that an average of 52% would prefer to see permit-only non-business 4x4s. 56% of ladies chose this option in the survey, compared to just 48% of men.
However, the motor insurance researchers also detected a regional difference as well as a gender difference. Motorists from London, East Anglia and the Midlands were less likely to favour the introduction of such a permit, whilst those in central Scotland and Yorkshire were most in support of it.
A spokesperson for Virgin Money Car Insurance said: "Reports of the death of the 4x4 might be exaggerated as sales are still relatively healthy. And many people genuinely need 4x4s for work or because they live in rural areas.
"Permits to own 4x4s sound draconian but with local authorities increasingly using punitively-priced parking permits to try to curb their use, perhaps the introduction of the 4x4 ownership permit isn't so far off," the cheap car insurance firm's representative finished.
