After a car accident that has caused whiplash you would hope that all details of your claim would be safely covered by your car insurance. Female neck injury victims have been warned, however, to be aware of bogus health practitioners after a worrying case has come to light.
In 2006, a woman known as patient X was referred to a physiotherapist by her insurance firm after complaining of neck pain sustained in a car crash. But when she attended an appointment, accompanied by her boyfriend, she was left bewildered and sobbing as the practitioner rubbed gel on her naked breasts.
The treatment included the physiotherapist allegedly waving an ultrasound scanner in front of her breasts, ten minutes of massage to her chest and the patient being strapped to a garden chair with fastenings across her breasts.
Patient X says that the physiotherapist did not give her the option to keep her bra on and did not explain why he needed to perform the massage when she had described only neck pain in her symptoms.
She said, "He didn't explain anything about the ultrasound. I asked him what the purpose of it was and what was about to happen and he said something technical about cell nuclei and vibrations.
Two days after the treatment session, Patient X contacted her insurance company and asked if she could change to a female physiotherapist.
The second therapist said, "At the end of the appointment X told me about what had happened at her previous appointment.
"It was the first time I had been told anything like that and I was quite shocked. In my professional opinion the treatment was inappropriate."
