Ford. What a magnificent history this car manufacturer has had. From its humble beginnings in 1903 to its current title as one of the worlds leading car producers, we take a look at how Ford has become one of the nation's favourite choices of car.
Over the years, Ford has become one of the most recognisable names on the roads for design, reliability and cheap car insurance. So, just how did this car manufacturer become one of the country's favourites? We take a look at some of the highlights of Ford's history, from 1903 right up until the present day.
The founding of Ford
In 1863 two proud parents named their newborn child Henry Ford, with absolutely no idea that their son would grow up to become the founder of such a successful car company. But Henry did just that and in 1903, the same year that the Ford Motor Company began trading in the United States, the first two Model A cars were brought over to the UK from Detroit.
After several shows including the Cordingley Automobile show in London and the Olympia Motor exhibition, which increased the number of Ford sales in the UK, Henry Ford decided to open his first branch in London, which saw an impressive 400 cars sold in the first year.
Soon enough Mr Ford realised that his business had grown with such a success that he would have to open a factory outside of the United States and in 1911 secured premises in Manchester, keeping the London branch as a show room.
The new factory led the way for a vast expansion in the company and in 1913 the Manchester-based Ford factory became the first plant where workers no longer used benches but a moving production line. The new system could allow for 60 men to make 21 chassis per hour, increasing its production and leading the way for Ford's Model T to become the best selling car in Britain at the time.
The expansion of Ford
To cope with such high demand, Ford management decided to buy another site for production and in the 1920's secured a 500-acre plot along the River Thames in Dagenham, Essex. All of their skilled workers who had been working in Manchester, right up until its production of the 300,000th Ford in Britain, were transported to the new factory in 1931.
During the Second World War, Ford played a vital role in the production of military vehicles and increased its workforce from 12,500 people to 35,000 to meet the high demands for light vans, army trucks, mobile canteens and Bre Gun carriers.
Following the war, the popularity of Ford couldn't have been better and by 1950 the company had designed a new salon range which included the Consul and the Zephyr; the two models went on to receive a very positive response at the Olympia Motor Show. Continuing with its success, Ford opened more factories throughout the UK and in 1962, the first ever Ford Cortina went on sale to the British public. Soon enough, more than one million Cortinas had been sold.
Ford continued to buy premises and worked hard to produce a variety of models including the Anglia 105E and what would become one of the most recognisable sporting cars, the Ford GT40. As the years went on Ford developed its range of models, introducing the Ford Escort in 1967, the Fiesta in 1976 and the Ford Focus in 2001 - a small car that has continued to benefit young female drivers with affordable deals on their woman car insurance.
With such a vast history, it's no wonder that Ford remains to be one of the most popular car manufactures in the UK and if its previous success is anything to go by, it looks like Ford will have a very rosy future.
