It's cheaper to buy car insurance for women than it is to cover a male driver – that's a well-known fact – but a new study has revealed just how much the average female driver is likely to save over a lifetime of driving.
Research carried out by MoneySupermarket.com has shown that the average British male motorist will pay a staggering £17,000 more over his average driving lifetime of 58 years if he insures a car every year between the ages of 17-75.
According to the price comparison website, which compared car insurance costs of around six million quotes from 2008, the average difference between male and female driver quotes was £289 cheaper for women and this figure provided the eye-popping expense sum for the men.
A spokesperson for CoverGirl, the specialist provider of car insurance for women, said, "As women are less likely to have high speed, high damage car accidents, they are less of a risk to insure. Their claims cost less to settle and so, insurers are able to give them cheaper car insurance quotes."
