A Derby man caught speeding at 119mph in pursuit of a woman who had allegedly scratched his BMW with a shopping trolley, used this information as mitigating evidence and was given a reduced punishment by the magistrate. However, it is now likely he will see an increase to his future BMW car insurance rate.
The damage to his vehicle occurred in a Sainsbury's car park on August 2nd; the BMW driver was told by another shopper that a woman in a silver Mini Cooper was responsible and he decided to see if he could find the car to get her registration number.
He was then stopped by police as he approached Michelover, having reached
very high speeds.
He said to the court, "There were no paths, no housing and no pedestrian
danger. I am very accustomed to high-performance cars.
"The car was under my control at all times and is a high-performance vehicle which will reach that speed in seconds."
The magistrate said the driver's explanation had been taken into account and that he could have issued a six month driving ban.
The BMW
driver was banned for three months and fined £667 with £35
costs and £15 government surcharge.
A CoverGirl spokesperson said, "BMW
car insurance providers take all convictions for driving offences
very seriously. Dangerous drivers will find their motor cover increases
as a consequence."
