BMW survey says girls are getting ruder at the wheel

A survey commissioned by BMW has found that women are more inclined to insult other motorists at the wheel than men are. The study of 1,000 drivers found that ladies are statistically more likely to mouth the word 'idiot' at fellow road users and apologise less often when they've made a mistake, reports the Sun newspaper.

Furthermore, ladies are less likely to acknowledge another driver with a polite gesture when, for instance, they're allowed into a line of traffic. According to BMW, 48 percent of men said they would thank the other motorist in this situation, compared to 46 percent of women.

BMW's findings run counter to the vast majority of similar studies done in the past. They say that women tend to be calmer, safer drivers than their male counterparts, and generally less likely to be affected by road rage and similar problems whilst at the wheel. This is part of the reason why many UK car insurance firms offer a discount for female motorists.

"On the whole, ladies tend to be more polite behind the wheel, not less so - so the BMW report makes quite concerning reading. But for the time being, I'm confident that the result is just a one-off rather than the start of some new violent trend," said a spokesperson for CoverGirl Car Insurance Services.
