A 21-year-old woman is unlikely to get any cheap car insurance quotes in the near future after her bonnet flew up while she was travelling down the M27 in Hampshire.
The bonnet hit her windscreen, smashing it and forcing her to drive blindly towards the central reservation. Fortunately, the Cardiff University graduate made it safely to the centre of the road, where she phoned the police for help.
Although the incident left her unscathed, it wrote off her Renault Clio. It is likely that she will have to claim the value of the car on her motor insurance, although she faces a £450 excess bill and an increase in the cost of car insurance quotes in the future if she does so.
She found out that others had reported alleged bonnet problems with Renault Clios in the past, and a feature on this issue has been on the BBC programme Watchdog. On top of this, a petition to the government has been filed regarding an inquiry into Renault Clio bonnets.
She commented: "What is it going to take for them to do something about it?
"Cars are replaceable, humans aren't, but I don't see why I should let Renault get away with it if it's a manufacturer's fault."
Renault stated: "The safety of its customers is of paramount importance to Renault UK. Renault has found no construction or design defect with the bonnet catch mechanism of the Clio II.
"The bonnet catch mechanism of the Clio II is safe, reliable and fit for purpose providing the vehicle is maintained correctly and the bonnet is closed as prescribed."
