New research has revealed that although our views on carbon emissions are changing, UK drivers still value cheap car insurance quotes over CO2 emissions when choosing a new car.
The study was commissioned by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and carried out by Ipsos MORI. It showed that just 13% of drivers put low CO2 emissions first when buying a new car, whilst 29% believe that low motoring costs such as cheap car insurance quotes are the most important factor to consider.
However, the greatest number of motorists - 45% of those interviewed - gave an equal weighting to CO2 emissions and cheap motoring costs when selecting their new car.
According to the researchers, the number of superminis and fuel efficient cars being sold has shot up in the last year, thanks to both low emissions and cheap motor insurance quotes.
A spokesperson for the SMMT said: "We have attributed this year's rise in sales of smaller cars and fuel efficient diesels partly to green concerns, partly to economic issues. However, it seems that the pocket is still more important to buyers than the environment.
"That is why it is so important that we continue to wrap the message that low carbon cars and low cost motoring go hand in hand."
