The availability of cheap car insurance for women is based on the statistics that women are safer drivers than men.
No wonder, then, that 33 complaints were made after a mobile phone company released an advert that appeared to show a woman using her mobile phone whilst driving.
The Advertising Standards Authority upheld the complaints after members of the public claimed that the ad condoned the use of handheld phones whilst driving.
The screened images showed a woman with her hands on the steering wheel,
a finger touching a mobile phone screen and then images of a woman out
enjoying herself.
Representatives of the electronics company that produced the phone defended
the advert by saying it had not intended to show the woman using her phone
whilst driving, but to portray her imagining all the things she could
be doing if she weren't stuck in a traffic jam.
The advertising watchdog decided to ban the ad in its present form.
A CoverGirl spokesperson said, "We are pleased with the outcome of the hearing. We provide cheap car insurance for women because they are safe drivers."
