If you need to claim for a stolen vehicle on your car insurance, women are reminded that if it has been taken while the keys were in the ignition this could invalidate the claim and the insurance company may not pay out.
Following a recent spate of "frosting" crimes (where the thief takes a car whilst the owners have left the engine running to defrost the vehicle), Thames Valley police have issued a further warning regarding leaving engines running while unloading at rubbish dumps and recycling centres.
PC Marc Boyd said, "I would advise motorists never to leave their keys
in the car, even if it is unattended for just a few seconds."
One recent incident in the area involved a 63-year-old woman who dislocated
her arm as thieves tried to drive off in her car. The woman's four year-old
grand-son was in the car at the time and she was dragged from the car
as she attempted to rescue him. Thankfully the thieves drove only a short
distance before they let the child out.
A spokesperson for CoverGirl, said, "As providers of car insurance for women we are aware that lone female drivers may be a target for car thieves. We strongly advise our customers not to leave their keys in the ignition as this is very tempting for opportunists."
