The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has warned motorists who refuse to buy car insurance, women included, that they are more likely to be caught than ever before.
The police are increasingly able to use automatic number plate recognition technology that reveals in minutes whether a vehicle is insured leaving those who chose to drive without car insurance far more liable to being caught and prosecuted.
ABI spokesperson Malcolm Tarling said, "There is none of this having to produce your insurance certificate within seven days, you can tell from the computer screen if you have got cover or not at the roadside."
He also added that the database of driver's car insurance details, established a few years ago, was proving to be valuable and that it was enabling the car insurance industry to work closely with the police in a bid to target uninsured drivers.
Recently published Department for Transport figures revealed that the number of motorists committing serious motoring offences such as driving without car insurance has fallen from 7.5 per cent in 2006 to 3.4 per cent.
A CoverGirl spokesperson said, "Your renewal premium will be adversely affected if you drive without car insurance. Women benefit from cheaper car insurance because of their gender, so there is no excuse to be in your car without the required cover."
