A car sharing scheme in Leeds is saving ladies lots of money on motoring costs such as fuel bills and female driver insurance.
Car Share Leeds, which was set up three years ago, allows people to contact other drivers in their area who make similar journeys to them. They can then share the journey, halving their own costs, as well as reducing pollution and congestion.
The organiser of the scheme, Ray Hill, said there is higher membership than ever, with more than 1,500 drivers involved.
He explained how it had developed: "In the early years people were disappointed because the matches simply weren't there but now that our membership has grown, the number of people doing the same journey has shot up."
Two ladies who met via the scheme say that it is working out very well for them. Kim Petch, 24, and Sue Lund, 29, live close together and both work at the Leeds University.
Kim said: "Sue drives and I give her £2 a day towards petrol and her running costs, which is great for me because it's door to door.
"I didn't drive at the time [that we started car sharing] but even though I do now I'm still car sharing because it saves me money and I enjoy Sue's company."
Lee-Anne Bass of the female driver insurance firm CoverGirl Car Insurance Services said: "It sounds like this scheme has really taken off in Leeds - let's hope that it can get going in other parts of the country too.
"Car sharing can save you a lot of money. For some people it can even cut out the need for a car altogether, meaning that you don't have to pay out for motor insurance, car maintenance or any of the other costs."
