Although we all buy our car insurance for women each year, how many of us actually think about the car we are insuring? Quite a lot, apparently.
Research by Bosch Car Service has revealed that many ladies have a pet name for their car. Most women who do christen their motor treat "her" as being female, with a motor insurance firm recently finding that the names Betsy and Ruby are particularly popular.
Men, on the other hand, are much more likely to give their cars a male moniker, almost as if they are an extension of their masculinity.
Although these findings are averaged across the UK, there are some interesting regional differences. People in London are much more likely to own male-named motors, whilst in Wales this trend is reversed with motorists preferring feminine names for their cars.
Welsh drivers are also shown to be more attached to their vehicles, with 55% admitting to feeling sad when it came to say goodbye for the final time. In comparison, just 35% of Southerners reported that they got upset when they sold their cars.
There was also a curious relationship between the age of the car and its gender.
Jan Walsh, who prepared the report, explained: "We found the results very interesting. It perhaps suggests that when a car is at its newest and looking its best, owners relate it to being female.
"It's like a woman who's spent time on herself to look good and is out on the street attracting attention.
"As the car gets older we consider a car to be male - it's reliable, solid and gets the job done, much like your dad or granddad.
Lee-Anne Bass of CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, a firm which specialises in cheap car insurance for women, commented: "I wonder if the cars that are given female names will be less likely to crash, just like lady drivers!"
