The cheap car insurance company Churchill has revealed that twice as many female learner drivers give up as their male counterparts.
Teaching people to drive is big business in the UK and Churchill's research shows that £3.2 billion is spent on wasted lessons after the pupil throws in the towel. On average, a learner driver will pay £687 for lessons before giving up.
The motor insurance firm found that 10% of people give up learning to drive altogether, many after becoming despondent following a test fail. Some of those reported to Churchill researchers that they got so wound up about driving lessons that they were physically sick with apprehension.
Depression and anxiety were not the only effects reported by people having difficulty learning to drive. Some said that they had become the butt of jokes about their bad driving, whilst others felt they were missing out on careers where a full driving licence is a requirement.
Churchill found that the main reason that female learner drivers fail their tests is inadequate observation at junctions, although reverse parking and reversing around corners are also very common reasons for failures.
A spokesperson for the cheap car insurance company said: "Our research clearly shows the steep cost of learning to drive. Learner drivers face financial pressure to pass their test first time with as few lessons as possible. But, it is worth taking the time and effort to become a confident driver by the time you pass."

*A replacement car can normally be arranged under one of the following conditions: (1) Comprehensive policyholders – a replacement car may be available under the terms of your insurance policy. Please check your policy details for more information. (2) Non fault accident – where we have the name, car registration number and insurance details of the person who caused the accident, we can supply a replacement car. This is done on a credit hire basis which means the costs for this service will be passed onto the insurance company of the person who caused the accident. We may not be able to arrange a replacement car where we are unable to get an admission of liability from their insurance company, or where the driver is untraceable or uninsured. (3) Repair garage – if your car is booked in for repairs following an accident, the repair garage may be able to provide a replacement car (subject to availability).
