The cheap car insurance company Direct Line failed to update the Motor Insurance Database (MID) with thousands of policy changes, it has been revealed.
A Labour MP brought this error to the attention of the government, saying that more than 400,000 car insurance policies had not been reported to the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) for upload onto the database.
The database is used by police to check whether cars are insured so that any uninsured drivers can be quickly identified and stopped.
As a result of Direct Line's error, at least one motorist, a young woman who has driving her father's car, was pulled over by the police who believed that she was driving without motor insurance.
When asked about how the mistake occurred, the cheap car insurance company said: "Due to a recent systems error, a number of Direct Line policies were not uploaded on to the MID."
