Motorists who want to get a cheap car insurance quote are being told by Moneynet.co.uk to go to a number of different insurers rather than staying loyal to their current provider.
The website, which offers a range of motor insurance comparisons and other financial advice, has revealed that by shopping around, drivers could see car insurance quotes that are 20% cheaper than their renewal quote.
A spokesperson for Moneynet.co.uk said: "As your car insurance renewal date approaches you can expect to receive a renewal notice through the post from your current insurer. Do nothing, and your insurer will automatically renew your insurance policy and charge you for the privilege.
"Taking the easy option and simply rolling over is the equivalent to burning fivers - except that you are also lining the pockets of the insurance companies."
He went on to advise motorists that they could further reduce the cost of their motor insurance quotes by keeping insurers up to date with circumstance changes, such as if they move into a lower risk postcode area.
