A breakdown company is urging female drivers to report illegible road signs in order to prevent accidents and protect women's cheap car insurance rates.
According to Autonational Rescue, there is a huge problem with road signs being so dirty they cannot be read, as well as signs being shrouded in spring vegetation.
Where vital road signs cannot be read because of dirt or overgrown plants, motorists' lives could be put at risk - not to mention their motor insurance.
A spokesperson for Autonational Rescue said: "Road signs are designed to warn motorists of hazards and when dirty they aren't easily seen, especially at night.
"Relying on the public to report any problems seems to be the norm across the country, but what is needed on councils' maintenance calendars is a scheduled wash 'n' brush up for signs."
Gemma Turner, of the cheap car insurance company CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, commented: "If you do notice a sign that is practically illegible for whatever reason, it is well worth getting in touch with the council.
"Most councils offer online forms as well as telephone contact so it is quick and straightforward to report any issues you spot."

*A replacement car can normally be arranged under one of the following conditions: (1) Comprehensive policyholders – a replacement car may be available under the terms of your insurance policy. Please check your policy details for more information. (2) Non fault accident – where we have the name, car registration number and insurance details of the person who caused the accident, we can supply a replacement car. This is done on a credit hire basis which means the costs for this service will be passed onto the insurance company of the person who caused the accident. We may not be able to arrange a replacement car where we are unable to get an admission of liability from their insurance company, or where the driver is untraceable or uninsured. (3) Repair garage – if your car is booked in for repairs following an accident, the repair garage may be able to provide a replacement car (subject to availability).
