Second-hand tyres bought over the net could be putting cheap car insurance for women at risk, according to a research project.
The research, commissioned by Continental Tyres, revealed that of 20 test tyres bought from an auction website, none passed all the statutory regulations.
There were a variety of reasons behind the failures, but many were plain dangerous and illegal to use on the road. For example, two had less tread depth than the legal requirement - something which could not only land a driver with a hefty fine from police but which could also cause an accident and result in a costly motor insurance claim.
Shockingly, one other tyre bought off the internet had been superglued together, making it particularly unsafe to use.
A spokesperson for RoadSafe said: "Tyres have a direct impact on handling, braking and acceleration, and problematic tyres can seriously affect driving safety, so it is vital that drivers know what they are buying."
Jenny Davidson, of car insurance for women specialists CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, added: "Although it is much cheaper to buy second-hand tyres, motorists must remember that there is no price you can put on safety. Spending a little more to get a quality tyre really is worth it."
