A conman duped hundreds of motorists into buying false female car insurance, making them think they were buying legal cover for their vehicles.
Often selecting women as easy victims, only when a duped driver tried to claim on a false insurance policy following an accident did the scam start to unravel.
Police have now caught up with the man and he faces criminal charges after managing to sell fake insurance to about 400 people.
The con trick has been happening in the USA. Remarkably, it seems the man was able to produce life-like documents via a home computer that fooled government officials and police officers.
To keep stealing money from innocent motorists, the conman tried to cover his tracks by changing phone numbers and issuing new business cards.
One woman victim bought a six-month policy for $40 (less than £20). While she said it now seems too good a deal to be true, at the time it seemed legitimate.
A spokeswoman at CoverGirl insurance said, "We wonder if this con trick would ever happen in the UK. But it's important for motorists to be vigilant - we recommend all woman car insurance buyers to always purchase car cover via reputable, recognised firms like CoverGirl."
