A Reading court last week heard how a pregnant woman, driving without a licence or female driver insurance, faked a number plate to steal fuel from a petrol station.
Earlier this year the expectant woman altered her number plate with black tape before driving off from a garage without paying for £20.03 of fuel.
The defending lawyer pleaded leniency for the accused as she was an ADHD sufferer (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) who had been on medication for many years. Doctors advised her to stop taking the medication when she was found to be pregnant, as the drugs could have been harmful to the unborn baby.
At the time of the offence the woman tested positive for opiates.
She was sentenced to an 18-month conditional discharge and given six penalty points on her provisional licence for driving without car insurance, it was reported.
A female driver insurance spokesperson said, "We understand the pressures on all motorists with rising fuel and insurance costs, but law breaking should be adjudged with the severest penalties allowable."
