Female crash test dummies are being used to try to improve car safety for women, which will hopefully lead to less serious accidents and cheaper motor insurance quotes.
The trials, which are being carried out in the US, focus on the efficacy of side airbags in certain types of car crashes.
The US transportation secretary Mary Peters spoke of the new tests, saying: "Everyone knows the old adage 'wrapping the car around the telephone pole'.We want to recreate this kind of crash to show how side airbags can protect the driver's head."
If the trials are successful, they will help to create better safety mechanisms in cars for ladies, who at present are more likely to suffer injury than men in many kinds of car accidents.
Lee-Anne Bass, of woman's car insurance company CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, said: "It is good that they are now taking into account women's different size and shape when making safety devices.
"Let's hope that this can help women to be better protected in cars. They may even find their LL30LL reflect this increased level of safety."
