Research from a lady car insurance company has shown that grandparents in the UK collectively travel 3.8 billion miles each year with their young charges in the back of the car.
According to Sheilas' Wheels, the average nan and granddad will do over 1,000 miles a year ferrying their grandchildren about; a mileage which would be equivalent to £3,160 if they were a taxi.
The women car insurance firm's research revealed that not only do grandparents rack up the miles to their own house on visits, but some also take their grandchildren to and from school, to sporting events and to groups such as brownies and cubs.
A spokesperson for Sheilas' Wheels commented: "Grandparents up and down the UK are clearly putting a lot of miles on the clock by filling the traditional shoes of mum and dad. They play a crucial role throughout school holidays in particular, especially for dual-income families in full time work.
The lady car insurance company's representative went on to advise grandparents to ensure their passengers' are kept as safe as possible by adhering to child seat regulations and using appropriate safety belts.
