A study from Roadsafe and Autoglass has shown that 50% of ladies risk their cheap car insurance rates by driving faster the speed limit on rural roads.
The survey, which canvassed the opinions of 1,500 UK drivers, focused on rural driving and the increased accident threat posed by country lanes. Statistics show that two thirds of fatal accidents occur in the countryside, something which two thirds of young drivers surveyed did not realise.
The managing director of AutoGlass said: "Less traffic on rural roads compared with urban roads and motorways often leads people to think that they are safer to drive on. But rural roads have their own very unique hazards, with high hedgerows, farm animals and slow-moving vehicles, hills, bends and blind corners affecting the view of the road ahead."
Half of the female motorists involved in the research admitted to speeding on country roads, compared to 69% of men.
A spokesperson for women's car insurance provider CoverGirl Car Insurance Services said: "Whilst this does show ladies are safer than men, it also reveals that a huge number of motorists, both male and female, are driving too quickly in rural areas."
The survey also found that young drivers are particularly likely to endanger themselves - and any chance they have of getting cheap car insurance - on country lanes, such as taking bends at speed and driving faster than it felt safe.
The Autoglass managing director went on: "As we enter the peak months for collisions on country lanes, our advice to young drivers and others travelling on rural roads is, even if you think you know the road ahead, watch your speed, beware of hazards, take extra care on bends and do not overtake unless you have a completely clear view of the road ahead."
