Car insurance rates for nannies and au pairs can push up driver premiums by as much as 400 per cent, a study has revealed.
Many insurers charge up to £1500 to add child carers to existing policies, with the average increase costing just under £700.
These staggering figures are often higher than insuring the main driver, causing a significant financial headache for working mums and dads.
Comparison website Confused.com carried out the research, pointing out many people were now employing nannies and au pairs while they carried on working.
Adding a nanny as an additional driver on policies when taking out new cover is likely to be cheaper than making changes mid-way through cover, according to the research.
Confused.com's product director Simon Lamble said, "If a car is essential, then it is very important to shop around for the best deal rather than accepting the first price your insurance provider gives you."
Covergirl, a specialist insurer for female drivers, confirmed the survey's findings. Motorists wanting to add nannies or au pairs to current car cover policies should apply for a cheaper online quote, said a spokeswoman.
"We have low overheads to help bring drivers cheaper car insurance. Do shop around for cover, but call us - we're likely to match or beat the lowest price," she said.
