A survey has found that thousands of ladies across the UK are putting their woman car insurance premiums at risk because they do not how to recover from a skid on ice.
Green Flag Motoring Assistance carried out the research, which revealed that one in five motorists would steer away from, rather than into a skid, giving them little chance of getting control back.
The survey also showed that three quarters of drivers believed their stopping distance would be increased by up to five times in icy conditions. In actual fact, it takes ten times as long as normal to stop and it seems drivers are risking their motor insurance by underestimating this.
Phillippa Naylor, spokesperson for Green Flag Motoring Assistance, said: "It is concerning that so many people do not realise the extent to which icy roads can affect the time it takes to come to a halt.
"We advise motorists to think about how they need to alter their driving techniques in the icy conditions by slowing down and driving more cautiously."
Lee-Anne Bass of woman's car insurance firm CoverGirl Car Insurance Services said: "There is usually a significant rise in the number of claims that are made on ladies' motor insurance policies in the winter.
"Skidding on ice makes up a large proportion of these, showing that most motorists need better education on how to handle these difficult conditions."
