So-called "black box" devices and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) have for some time been touted as a means to provide cheap car insurance premiums. Now, a new system, from electronics retailer Maplin, aims to help the insurer's plight directly.
The T-eye In-Car Driving Recording System is a compact camera system that could provide drivers with valuable evidence in the event of a car accident.
A built-in GPS receiver registers the vehicle's speed, location and direction of travel, whilst the G-sensor identifies the motion of the car, particularly any rapid acceleration, deceleration or sudden impacts.
The 170-degree angle lens cameras for the front and rear of the car have
infra-red night vision ability and record footage at 20 frames per second
onto the system's SD card. In the event of an accident data is marked
and stored so that it can be analysed via the playback function.
The T-eye In-Car Driving Recording System can also operate when the car
is stationary which might prove very useful when you arrive back to your
car to find someone has backed into it.
A CoverGirl spokesperson commented, "This sort of device could prove a real boon for cheap car insurance premiums in the future. It may mean that more disputed accidents can be solved with photographic evidence, thus protecting innocent drivers from unscrupulous motorists who might lie to protect their no-claim bonus."
