Studies by a ladies car insurance firm have shown that the anti-drink drive message is beginning to get through to female motorists, but has failed to get through to as many men.
While six out of ten women feel safest not drinking any alcohol, the figures for men is lower with only four out of ten men believing they're better behind the wheel completely sober.
Of the 3000 people asked, only 2% of women would risk drinking more than two units of alcohol before driving compared with 12% of men. This perhaps explains why female motorists' accident figures are so much lower than men's.
Although 1% of men admitted they would drive after five units or more, none of the women questioned said they would. Lower drink drive rates obviously also means lower accident rates as drinking can impair reaction times and so increase the risk of a crash.
These figures are reflected in the lower drink driving convictions women have. Men are three times more likely to have a drink drive conviction than a man. Women's better attitude towards drink driving is just one of the reasons why ladies car insurance premiums are so much lower than men's.
