A lady was fortunate to avoid a rail disaster and a massive claim on her woman car insurance when she turned onto a Sussex railway line because her sat nav 'told her to'.
The 52-year-old woman, who has not been named, drove onto a level crossing in Pevensey, near Eastbourne and turned left, facing down the tracks during rush hour.
Luckily, Network Rail Sussex was able to prevent any trains from travelling along the lines and causing an accident with the immobile car.
However, this did mean rail passengers in Brighton and Hastings were delayed for over an hour while a breakdown firm was called to remove the Ford Fiesta.
The lady, from Dorking, Surrey, was reported to police for driving without due care and attention and obstructing the railway.
A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: "She will be summonsed to a local court in the Eastbourne area to explain her actions in due course.
"Police are also making inquiries with the sat nav company about the error."
Lee-Anne Bass, spokesperson for woman car insurance company CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, commented: "People need to use common sense when following directions from their sat nav devices.
"If this woman is found guilty of driving without due care and attention, her mistake is likely to cost her dear in terms of future motor insurance quotes."
