While most ladies are worrying about how much their year's woman car insurance premium is going to come to, Kathy Prosser is splashing out £500 for every weekend she indulges in her favourite motoring hobby.
Kathy is a 32-year-old motorcycling enthusiast from Hull, Yorkshire who has recently taken up racing competitively in a woman-only team called Feisty Racing.
She has been a fan of motorbikes since a young age and has ridden them on public roads for several years since passing her test in 2002.
She said: "My auntie was the first women I ever knew who had a motorbike and I just thought that was really cool.
"I had boyfriends who had bikes and I rode as pillion but I hated it. I always wanted to be in control of the bike and I thought it would be safer too."
Whilst browsing the web, perhaps for a low cost motor insurance quote, she came across www.bikegirl.co.uk and started considering the possibility of racing.
Motorbike racing, however, does not come cheap and really puts woman car insurance rates into perspective. It costs around £200 for a set of tyres that will only last one race, £400 for a decent helmet, £500 for some leathers and there are even more expenses on top of that.
Despite the huge cost, Kathy decided to pursue her dream of motorcycling racing. She has been enjoying competing in the track since the beginning of 2006 with some success and, although she had originally planned to compete for only one season, is planning to get back into the racing seat in 2007.
She commented: "It's so much more fun than driving a car and so exhilarating. I've never really thought about it being dangerous."
