A bizarre study by university researchers has found that female motorists brake faster - protecting their woman car insurance - if they can smell lemons.
The Middlesex University research revealed that a pleasant lemony aroma can enhance ladies' reaction times and concentration, which can lead to an overall improvement in driving performance.
30 ladies and men took part in the study, in which a range of factors were measured while they played a rally driving game on a Playstation.
Those who played whilst being exposed to a nice lemon scent were found to have the best results.
However, before you start filling your car with lemons, the researchers warn that it is most effective if the lemon smell is intermittent as drivers will become accustomed to it otherwise.
Lee-Anne Bass, of the woman car insurance company CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, commented: "This is a really strange idea for a study but it appears that the researchers may have hit on something here.
"As long as you like the smell of lemons, there isn't much to lose in getting a lemon air freshener for your car - it might just save your motor insurance."
