Woman car insurance firms exempt from anti-discrimination laws

Woman car insurance companies and customers alike can breathe a sigh of relief after insurers were granted an exemption from anti-discriminatory legislation.

It was feared that companies would be prevented from providing cheaper car insurance for women by the EU Gender Initiative, which outlaws discrimination based on gender.

However, negotiations by motor insurance firms have secured the future of great value woman car insurance policies.

A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said: "The government recognises that it is fair for insurance companies to use data on age and gender in setting premiums for some products.

"This is because different groups of people represent different levels of risk in some types of insurance."
