In the eyes of the law, horses and cars are not really all that different.
You might not need cheap car insurance for a horse, but that doesn't mean you can ride one in an irresponsible way and expect to avoid prosecution - just as a woman from Sylvania, Alabama found out recently.
Concerned citizens called the police at midnight one night after she was spotted riding through the town centre on horseback. Cars were having to swerve to avoid the horse but the 40-year-old lady showed no intention of stopping or steering the horse out of harm's way.
Officers caught up to her and repeatedly asked the woman to pull over, but she ignored them and instead tried kicking the now exhausted animal into a gallop. Then after going a short distance she dismounted - at which point the police were able to make their arrest.
The lady, who it turned out had taken a variety of recreational drugs before saddling up, has been charged with 'driving while under the influence of a controlled substance', an offence which will more than likely affect the price of her next woman car insurance premium.
"I've heard of cyclists being arrested for drink- and drug driving, but this is my first horse!" said Gemma Turner, spokesperson for the cheap car insurance experts at CoverGirl.
