The reason that car insurance for women is usually cheaper than for men is because ladies are considered to be safer drivers. Statistics in the past have shown that they are much less likely than men to partake in risky driving or be involved in serious accidents.
However, these statistics are changing, possibly signalling the end of cheap car insurance for women.
A Scottish investigation into the number of ladies with drink-driving convictions shows that there has been an increase of more than 50% since 1999.
North East Scotland regional MSP Maureen Watt commented that the dramatic rise was "truly shocking" and was an effect of the "ladette binge drinking culture."
The statistics, supplied by the Scottish Executive, showed that while in 1999 there had been 773 female drink-driving convictions, by 2005 this had risen to 1,209.
Lee-Anne Bass of CoverGirl Car Insurance Services said: "Whilst I don't think this finding on its own is going to dramatically increase the cost of female motor insurance, if the trend continues then women may find they can no longer enjoy such cheap car insurance rates."
