A study by newcarnet.co.uk has revealed that the humble speed bump poses a significant threat to motorists' cheap car insurance - and to the limits of their patience.
In the study, 87% of drivers told the website that they wanted to see an end to speed bumps and would support all forms of them being removed from UK roads.
Whilst speed bumps were introduced in order to slow down traffic, making roads safer, many claim that their downsides do not outweigh any benefits that they do give.
They have been cited as the cause of suspension damage in as many as one in eight cars, forcing people to claim on their motor insurance, thereby losing their no claims bonus and all chances of cheap car insurance in the future.
As well as causing damage to cars, speed humps have been blamed for causing discomfort in motorists, such as those who suffer from the bone condition osteoporosis.
A spokesperson for newcarnet.co.uk explained that speed humps' supposed safety benefit may not even exist: "In Barnet, for instance, the local council removed all speed humps in 2005, and recorded a 14.9% drop in accidents in the first six months."
