Ladies who drive MPVs and 4x4s don't make as expensive claims on their women's car insurance as those who own smaller cars, a leading motoring organisation has claimed.
Larger cars, often disparagingly known as Chelsea Tractors, usually don't qualify for cheap motor insurance quotes thanks to their powerful engines and costly parts.
However, all this could be about to change if research by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) proves to be accurate.
The study found that occupants of 4x4s are less likely to be seriously injured or killed in road accidents and more likely to be totally unhurt than people in standard cars, thus reducing the cost of resulting car insurance claims.
Advanced safety technology contained within 4x4s is probably the reason behind these findings. This technology includes electronic stability programmes, anti-rollover systems, and other accident avoidance devices.
Lee-Anne Bass of CoverGirl Car Insurance Services commented: "It is unlikely that this will immediately mean a reduction in the price of motor insurance quotes for female 4x4 drivers, but there may be some effect if these vehicles continue to become safer."
