A women's car insurance provider has revealed that as many as 12 million female motorists could be risking a motor insurance claim by wearing inappropriate sunglasses while driving.
Sheilas' Wheels, famous for its ultra-pink adverts complete with catchy song publicising its cheap ladies' car insurance deals, is highlighting the fact that many ladies are unwisely accessorising with unsuitable eyewear for the summer months.
Its 'Summer Driving Vision' study revealed that just a fifth of female drivers pick a pair of sunglasses because they will be good for driving, compared to three fifths, who base their choice on stylish looks.
According to the research, which was conducted in association with The Eyecare Trust, one in ten ladies could be putting their women's car insurance at risk by wearing sunglasses with very dark lenses, whilst as many as a million choose to wear potentially vision-limiting wide-armed styles.
A spokesperson for the women's car insurance company said: "Too many women drivers are unaware of the dangers of wearing some of this summer's hottest sunglasses' styles when driving. Wide arms and dark lens tints may be the must-haves of the moment, but fashion-conscious women should put safety ahead of style when in control of a car.
"We'd like to encourage all women to keep a sensible, practical pair of sunglasses for driving at hand in their glove box, free of scratches and smears. Wearing unsuitable sunglasses is just as dangerous as wearing none at all when driving in bright conditions."
Meanwhile, The Eyecare Trust added: "Visit your local optometrist for practical advice on choosing appropriate eyewear for driving. The lens colour, frame density, filter category and reflective coatings can all play a part in determining whether you sunglasses are roadworthy - or not!"
