Cheap car insurance firm defends elderly drivers

New proposals for an upper age limit for driving to be introduced have been met with dismay by groups promoting the rights of the elderly, as well as a refutation of the suggestion that they are more dangerous than young drivers by a cheap car insurance company.

The move, which had been proposed by a Norfolk coroner who had seen a case involving an elderly motorist who was fatally injured in a road accident, has been criticised by a number of pensioners' groups. These groups say that denying the elderly car transport would cut off many who live in rural areas that are not well serviced by bus routes.

A spokesperson for the Norfolk and Norwich Pensioners' Association said: "To impose an age limit would quite simply be unfair. Many people, particularly those in rural areas, rely on their car.

"Often they only drive short distances but without a vehicle they wouldn't be able to visit the shops particularly now that many local stores have closed."

Norwich Union has commented on the issue, saying that elderly motorists who are unsafe in their cars may be taken off the road by virtue of the fact that those who have many accidents will find it difficult to get any motor insurance cover.

The cheap car insurance company's spokesperson said that drivers in their teens are more likely to have a road accident than all other age groups other than those aged 85 or over, although he also added: "We have a large number of long-term elderly customers, including people who have over 100-years-old, who have good records and who we are happy to continue insuring."

Norwich Union's spokesperson also pointed out that motor insurance claims made by young drivers are generally more expensive than those made by elderly drivers, as the former are likely to have more passengers in the car than the latter.
