A Hertfordshire school teacher who had a tree fall across her car may be more seriously injured than early reports had suggested.
The 53-year-old woman was driving to work in high winds when the 70ft conifer came crashing down on the roof of her Renault Clio.
Local paramedics were able to reach her within minutes and rush her to hospital, prompting reporters to speculate that the woman had done more damage to her cheap car insurance than her person. However, her husband has since confirmed the injuries were considerably more serious than cuts and bruises.
Medical staff at the Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield found the woman had fractured her neck, cheek bone and skull, and they are worried the impact may have damaged her spinal chord.
"They have stabilised her injuries at the moment," said the victim's husband. "She has had further X-rays and scans and they are happy with everything to date."
"We have to be thankful for that and thankful she is alive."
Lee-Ann Bass, spokeswoman for the cheap car insurance specialists at CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, said: "I can't imagine how traumatic this must be for the woman's family - let alone the victim herself.
"To be thinking one minute that a pricey motor insurance premium is the worst you have to deal with, and the next minute hearing your wife or mother is fighting for her life - that must be just awful," she added.
