Ladies in Frodsham, Cheshire, are being encouraged to secure their cars properly after a spate of thefts which could threaten woman car insurance rates.
According to the Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News, thieves may have fallen for the urban myth that a chip in Ford Focus radios can also be used in Sky digiboxes.
However, police refute the suggestion that technology is behind the spate, instead believing that the thefts are motivated by the value of stereos on the good old-fashioned black market.
An inspector from Cheshire Police said: "I can't believe people actually believe it would work, it would put Sky out of business. I think it is more likely that the stereos are being stolen to order.
"These stereos are a marketable item at the moment and there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work being undertaken to trace where they are being sold from and to."
He went on to advise people to protect their motor insurance by parking their car close to walls so that thieves could not enter through the passenger door, and revealed that they tended not to try from the drivers' side due to the chance that forensic evidence could be left on the steering column."
A spokesperson for the woman car insurance company CoverGirl Car Insurance Services said: "Having a car broken into isn't an experience that anyone would want to go through so whether you are parking at home or while you are out and about, never forget to practice good security.
"Opportunist thieves won't hesitate to strike if you leave a window down or the door unlocked, even for a few minutes."
