For the average woman, car insurance is pretty cheap as ladies usually have quite low speed, low cost accidents. However, an 82-year-old lady from near Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire is not quite the average woman in this respect.
Mrs Cordeau, who is French but has lived in England for over 60 years, went to her local Texaco petrol station expecting to fill up her Toyota quietly and be on her way. However, all did not go to plan.
She was having a bit of trouble lining up near enough to the petrol pump and an assistant from the petrol station came out to help. Unfortunately, as Mrs Cordeau was manoeuvring, she accidentally pushed the accelerator instead of the brake.
Station manager Lloyd Ward explained what happened next: "Suddenly the car raced across the forecourt, hit the pump and she almost did a complete barrel roll. She'd shot forward, crashed up the plinth and smashed the pump over."
Luckily, Mrs Cordeau was unhurt and fire crews helped her through the sunroof of the car, which was left resting against the destroyed pump with its left wheels several feet above its right.
Mr Ward said that the damage she had done to the pump was extensive and that her motor insurance company would be footing a bill of thousands of pounds.
This does not bode well for the unfortunately elderly driver, who up 'til now has enjoyed low cost woman car insurance.
She commented: "This is all very embarrassing. I'm very shaken and most upset. I have driven all my life and I've never had an accident before."
