An "intelligent" key has caught out a man who tried to defraud his cheap car insurance company, reports the Mirror.
The 34-year-old male driver reported to police that his Mini Cooper had been stolen from outside his girlfriend's home in Hartlepool, County Durham.
However, after he had claimed £12,500 on his car insurance, police took a reading from his spare key to reveal that the car had been driven 1,500 miles – after he had reported the theft.
In court the male driver pleaded guilty to attempting to defraud his motor cover provider, and was sentenced to a 48 week spell in prison, suspended for two years – he will also have to complete 200 hours of unpaid community work.
A spokesperson for CoverGirl, specialist providers of woman's car insurance, said, "Scammers are being caught more often because of these 'intelligent' systems in cars, and insurance firms' own protocols for dealing with, what appear to be, fraudulent claims."
