Woman's car insurance advice to avoid garage scams

By going to a woman's car insurance specialist you can be sure that your car insurance will do the job you want; protect you financially in the event of a car accident. However, it's not always so clear cut when you visit a mechanic.

According to insurance.co.uk, almost half (48%) of British motorists believe they have been conned by an unscrupulous mechanic.

Just over a third (34%) suggest they have been overcharged by £100 for unnecessary or poor quality work; whilst 51% think they have been overcharged by £500, 12% by £1000 and 3% say they have been stung for a staggering £3000 over the odds.

Motorists fear being scammed so much that 52% try to stay away from professional mechanics, whilst 42% believe that a garage will try to do work that does not need doing.

Of the women who answered, 42% feared their lack of knowledge would be exploited; whilst 22% of the male pollsters admitted the same.

An insurance.co.uk spokesperson said, "Whilst the vast majority of car mechanics and garages are entirely reputable, our research highlights that there are a number of rogue tradesmen trying to exploit drivers and consumer confidence in the industry is low. "In the current economic climate car owners could be holding on to used cars for longer, rather than trading in for a new model. For the safety of all road users, it's vital we make sure our vehicles are adequately maintained and serviced."A woman's car insurance specialist from CoverGirl said, "We suggest; 1) get a recommendation for a local garage from someone you trust, 2) Don't be afraid to say "no", and go somewhere else, 3) Ask for a breakdown of the bill or ask the mechanic to show you what work has been done."
