A new womans car insurance survey has shown that up to 10% of women could have put themselves, their passengers and other road users at serious risk by wearing inappropriate footwear to drive in.
Sheila's Wheels, women's car insurance provider, surveyed 750 women and revealed 75 women who admitted having an accident or a near-miss because their footwear had malfunctioned when using the vehicle's pedals.
Nearly a quarter of those surveyed admitted to driving in unsuitable footwear because they could not be bothered to change before they started driving, even if they knew their shoes were not safe.
Flip flops, sling backs and high stilettos appear to be the main safety culprits, with such footwear slipping off pedals or becoming wedged underneath thus making vehicle control a serious issue.
A Covergirl womans car insurance provider spokesperson commented, "These driving statistics give 'killer heels' a whole new meaning. A fatal car accident caused by inappropriate footwear could constitute a dangerous driving offence, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years' imprisonment."
